Togo President-Faure Gnassingbe Wins Election For Third Term Run

Faure Gnassingbe
Incumbent Faure Gnassingbe has been announced as the winner of Togo’s presidential election after the electoral commission finally released results.

Faure won 58.75% of the vote, with main opposition leader Jean-Pierre Fabre getting 34.95%. External observers from ECOWAS and the African Union described the elections as free and fair.

Faure Gnassingbe came to power in 2005, and has since won two elections to remain in power. He’s the son of Eyadema, the military dictator who ruled Togo for decades after seizing power in a military coup in 1967.

Faure Gnassingbe would rule now till the next elections in 2020, when he could stand again since Togo currently has no limits on the number of times a President can serve.
